Chelmsford City 0-0 Welling United

Welling United continued their improved form in 2022 with a hard-earned point at in-form Chelmsford City.

Dipo Akinyemi had the first shot of the match but found himself behind with the angle against him. After that, Chelmsford then had a spell at the top and probably should have taken an early lead. Hady Ghandour exploded when Tom Blackwell knocked it down for him from Chez Isaac’s smart ball. Isaac was back in action when he found Ghandour but his left foot curler was again too high.

Cameron James fired wide for Chelmsford before Welling had an opportunity when Yannis Drais picked Danny Parish from a corner but his header flew past the near post.

Jack Sims chased a ball but didn’t make it and he came to Louis Dunne. However, Arthur Penney pulled him away and by the time he fell in James’ way, Sims was back and made an easy save.

Drais had a shot saved for the Wings then, at the other end, James tried his luck again against his old club, but his deflected shot was saved easily by Sims.

Immediately after the interval, Welling closed in when Akinyemi passed Jacob Marsden, but Ade Oluwu read the situation well and raced to hook him on the line. Marsden then saved from Parish before Sims did the same from Ghandour at the other end.

A half-cleared Chelmsford corner fell James’ path but his shot was cleared off the line by Penney before Marsden had to stay alert when Akinyemi’s shot hit a divot and could have surprised him.

Mason Saunders-Henry was brought in and had a half chance immediately but couldn’t connect cleanly with his shot as he lost his balance.

As the match entered its final fifteen minutes, Welling was desperately close to breaking the draw. Maxwell Statham let fly with a stack driver that rattled the goal frame as it flew off the bar.

Dave Winfield took the lead when a half-cleared corner was brought back to life before Chelmsford were reduced to ten men in the final minute when Christian Frimpong was sent off for a second yellow card.

Although Bradley Stevenson deflected a shot in injury time, Welling didn’t have enough time to capitalize on his power play and they had to settle for a well-deserved point.
