Eoin Morgan gets the better of England captain Jos Buttler as London Spirit beat Manchester Originals at Lord’s… with Tottenham striker Harry Kane making a pre-match appearance

  • Eoin Morgan emerged victorious in the Battle of England captains
  • Morgan’s London Spirit beat Buttler’s Manchester Originals by 52 points
  • Kieron Pollard smashed 34 balls in just 11 balls for the Spirit at Lord’s

  • England football captain Harry Kane took part in the pre-match festivities

The match had been billed as Eoin Morgan v Jos Buttler but it was another England captain who stole the show before a ball was even played at Lord’s as London Spirit hammered Manchester Originals by 52 runs.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane entered the coin toss wearing a London Spirit shirt with none other than the number 10 on the back, before heading into a six-hitter contest on the famous outfield with Spurs teammate Matt Doherty.

The England football captain is an avid fan of the game having taken part in numerous cricket challenges over the years and was even offered a net by England Test captain Ben Stokes, after Tottenham uploaded a video of the team playing cricket in the club gymnasium at their training ground.

Kane failed to hit a six in the challenge, but there was nothing to be ashamed of on a night when it took Manchester Originals 74 deliveries from Jos Buttler to finally clear the ropes.

Eoin Morgan was in action at Lord’s for the first time since calling a day on his international career and opting to strike after winning the draw. Zak Crawley (41 from 34) helped set the platform for the home side alongside the skipper (37 from 26) before a ruthless 34 from 11 from Kieron Pollard catapulted the home side to 160 for six of their 100 deliveries.

For the former England captain, it was another welcome shot to add to his 47 against the Invincibles Oval after his struggles on the international stage.

In contrast, Jos Buttler’s innings pretty much set the pattern for the Originals’ response. He failed to reach the limit on his first ten balls and his 11th was placed high in the London skies before Mason Crane produced a magnificent dive to eliminate the England captain.

From there, the Originals fell apart with only Phil Salt (36 of 34) reaching double the top seven before being beaten by Liam Dawson. Jordan Thompson was the Spirit bowlers’ pick taking four for 21 of his 20 deliveries.

Salt was the Originals’ top scorer on the night but admitted his disappointment as the Manchester side lost their second game in a row.

“I wasn’t particularly happy. We never started and we never really had two of us reaching the limits and spinning the strike and that can be quite frustrating,” Salt said.

With the added focus on England’s top order after their recent struggles with the white ball and a World Cup on the horizon, the 25-year-old, who marked his first international century in June, has insisted that it was about taking things one game at a time instead of looking at what lies ahead.

“For me, it’s about putting myself in the best position to win a game. It’s as simple as that at the moment,” added Salt.
