Fat Hippo: famous dirty burgers and fries

There are certain foods that invite gluttony, that savor the mess they create on your hands, face, arms, and table. Barbecue comes to mind, with juicy, sauce-laden ribs and succulent chunks of meat. But the king of gourmet foods, one food that can never (and should never) result in a clean plate or face, is the burger. big hippopotamus, an already legendary burger institution outside of London, has some of the dirtiest, dirtiest, dirtiest burgers around. And they are quite proud of it: “Good food is our motto”. And now they’ve opened a restaurant in Shoreditch, so Londoners can get dirty with the best of them too.

Originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne, and starting again in 2010, Fat Hippo is the kind of place you can mention to a Northerner and see their eyes light up. And it will certainly be a welcome arrival for North Londoners as well as Londoners themselves. Their locations cover 15 restaurants and a fleet of trucks and kiosks. You will find them anywhere in the UK, ranging from Bristol to Newcastle (obviously) via Liverpool, Edinburgh, etc. And we’re so glad they finally decided we needed a little Fat Hippo too.

Serving good old fashioned food, roll up your sleeves and put it in your face, they’re proud of their dirty fries, adventurous burgersand exceptional sides. They don’t just serve one type of fries as well, diners can choose from a variety of potato delivery mechanisms: we’re talking toddlers and fried waffles as well as the old standard. And the burgers are just crazy.

Their signature burgers include the PB+DD who loads a double cheeseburger with big peanut butter, bacon jam and smoked chili jelly, and the Honey Monsta, a monstrous combination of two beef patties topped with American cheese, a piece of buttermilk chicken, smoked bacon, pink pickled onions, Fat Hippo sauce and hot honey. For vegans, they have five burgers to choose from, with many sides and drinks also vegan as standard or can be made vegan. Among the vegan burgers is the Notorious VFC 2.0, a fried plant-based piece of chkn from the south, loaded with waffle fries, vegan cheese, lettuce, pickles, barbecue sauce and zinger mayo. To top it off, all burgers come with free hand-cut fries as standard.

Plus, if that’s not enough somehow, you can get their famous beer breaded cheese balls, Chills (Fried pickles), Wachos (a nacho waffle hybrid), wings and more. And all this without forgetting the drinks and desserts, which are just as indulgent (and blur the lines between the two). In addition to their own beers (like Fat Hippo IPA and Fat Hippo Hillbilly Lager), they also serve Naughty Slushes and Shakes. The PB+Plug, for example, mix together Jack Daniels, peanut butter, honey and vanilla ice cream for a truly decadent shake. And you’re sure to see their exclusive black vanilla soft serve ice cream on all London Instagram accounts soon. A blend of almonds and cashews, it’s a Fat Hippo exclusive, created for the brand by vegan soft-serve makers DAPPA.
