A MAN has revealed what it’s like to live in the Tower of London, but says that’s not all it’s crazy – because ordering pizza is nigh on impossible.
Comedian Tom Houghton has lived in the tourist hotspot since the pandemic, sharing the highs and lows of life in the 1,000-year-old castle.
Since May 2020, Tom has shared TikTok videos and Instagram stories under @HonorableTom from his account about his time at the Tower of London.
Houghton said her father, General Sir Nicholas Houghton, the former head of the British Army, was appointed as a Constable of the Tower of London and moved into his Tower residence in 2016.
During the pandemic, Tom said he moved in to help his career in London and save on rent.
In an Instagram post, Tom said: “I used to live in Brighton with my comedy band. I left my comedy band to pursue a solo career.
“When I did that I moved to London, in order to have more opportunities, but I had to take a financial hit and then I was left with a dilemma of where to live.
“I had a choice: either rent a closet in zone five for £7,000 an hour or the unique opportunity to live rent-free with my father in the center of the historic grand palace.
“Well, Cinderella went to that ball and now I live here.”
And while showing how much he loved his life in the tower, he also revealed an aspect that made it difficult.
In a comical ‘Trying to order pizza at the Tower of London’ video, Tom details his struggles while trying to do simple, everyday things, as takeaways often don’t believe him when he tells them his address.
He jokes: “Perfect yeah the delivery address is the Tower of London… Because that’s where I live… I promise you I’m not lying… because people really live there …
“A lot of people live there… not him of course because he died 400 years ago…
“You literally won’t be able to deliver it to my front door… Well, you won’t be able to walk through the gates of battle… or the moat…”
In the fun videos, Tom also shows his followers what life is like inside the palace, as his living quarters are tucked around the corner from where previous monarchs kept their high-society prisoners.
He currently has to pass throngs of tourists to get to his front door, but there is a more discreet side door that he often uses.
Houghton said in a TikTok that her front door is guarded by a Queen’s Guard that you can often see in the background of her videos – a soldier guarding the official royal residences.
Currently, nearly 100 people claim the Tower of London as their home address, including a resident doctor and 37 Yeoman Warders, better known as the Beefeaters.
