London-based Indian restaurateur in UK New Years Honors list

London: Amritpal Singh Maan, a philanthropist who has provided more than 200,000 meals to people in need since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, received the OBE in recognition of his service to charity and the community. He is one of the people honored by the Queen in the 2022 New Year’s Honor List.

Known mostly as Amrit Maan, he is a humble philanthropist among the Sikhs and many other communities and for several years has supported charities and organizations that engage primarily with the homeless, armed forces, heritage and the arts.

Those who know Amrit Maan most likely know him as the Managing Director of the Punjab Restaurant in Covent Garden, established in 1946 by his great-grandfather as the UK’s first Punjabi restaurant.

Amrit Maan has sponsored nearly £ 1million of meals to the UK public, several historic community events, exhibitions and conferences, and since the pandemic began in March 2020, has provided more than 200,000 meals to those in need. .

In addition, as a lawyer, he has provided pro bono assistance to hundreds of victims of crime and traumatic events and has given free legal and business advice to small businesses and organizations to date, according to a statement.

At the end of 2018, his personal love for the arts led him to start a social enterprise to try and showcase British artists from the Punjab and is a trusted administrator and advisor for several other organizations including Under One Sky, The Seven Dials Trust, Khalsa Academies Trust and The Sharan Project, the statement said.

“I was stunned in disbelief when I received the honor email notification. I had had a difficult day and immediately forgot! said Amrit Maan.

“I feel truly honored to have received this honor for service to charity and to the community. Seva, selfless service, for community has been the philosophy of our family business since its founding, and I accept this honor not only for myself, but on behalf of the generations before me who have made enormous sacrifices, taken risks and shared their minds with me, ”he added.

Amrit Maan said recognition of the Officer of the Order of the British Empire will strengthen his resolve to continue philanthropic work. – (NDTV)
