EASTWARD MODE POINTS: London Fashion Week may have ended on Tuesday night, but the show continues – at least in east London – where a multi-faceted festival runs through September 26. The Fashion District Fashion Festival is a five-day event for commerce and consumers. , encompassing retail, business, technology and innovation.
Fashion District is a local organization that supports fashion businesses in five boroughs in East and North London. Supporters include London University of the Arts, Westfield Stratford and the British Fashion Council.
Organizers said the aim was to support start-ups and emerging talent with retail pop-ups, learning and networking opportunities, and showcase the Stratford area to the east of London as a hub for fashion and innovation. Fashion District also seeks to breathe new life into East London’s fashion and craft heritage by supporting tech companies in the region.
Events include how to reduce, reuse, and recycle wardrobe items with tips from companies like By Rotation, Reture, and Save Your Wardrobe. Clothing and jewelry upcycling and recycling courses are also offered with Design Blender, as well as crochet workshops (crochet is a big trend for the spring 2022 season) and a special event inspired by Les Arpilleras, that create traditional embroidery and quilting. There will also be a Spring 2022 collections parade by some of the designers of On | Off London Fashion Week and a performance choreographed by Kwame Asafo-Adjei to accompany it. The festival also hosts investor pitches.
According to the organizers, pre-seed and seed start-ups will have the opportunity to present themselves directly to 20 VCs and investors, with a particular focus on innovation and sustainability. There will also be discussions on how to promote a diverse future for fashion with speakers including Tosin Adeosun, Founder of African Style Archive and Assistant Curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
