Orioles vs. Blue Jays picks and predictions: Following Alek Manoah’s lead

Content of the article

The Toronto Blue Jays bats continued to make noise over the weekend, scoring 17 runs in their three-game series against the Detroit Tigers. They’ll be looking to continue swinging hot sticks when they open a four-game set with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Blue Jays have ridden those bats to win 13 of their last 17 games, but are no closer to stalking the Yankees at the top of the AL East. So they can’t afford to drop too many games at the damn Orioles. But is it worth supporting them at full cost tonight?

Find out in our free MLB betting picks and predictions for the Orioles against the Blue Jays on Monday, June 13.

Orioles vs Blue Jays betting preview

Starting pitchers

Kyle Bradish (1-3, 6.45 ERA): The transition to the major leagues has been difficult for the 25-year-old rookie right-hander. Bradish hasn’t finished the fifth inning in five of his last seven starts and has been caught 10 times in his eight starts this season.

Alek Manoah (7-1, 1.81 ERA): Manoah has been one of the best starters in baseball this season. The right-hander has allowed two or fewer earned runs in 10 of his 11 starts while recording at least six innings in 10 of 11 as well.

Orioles picks and predictions vs. Blue Jays

Our side and total predictions are based on our analysis of the line and total in this match. Our best bet is our preferred choice in all markets.

Run a row analysis

After a slow start to the season, the Blue Jays offense is showing us just how dangerous it can be after going 13-4 in their last 17 games overall. During this span, the Jays lead MLB in batting average, OPS and wRC+ and they will try to maintain that against the Orioles.

However, these are not the flightless O’s of years past. This is a scrappy bunch of birds that come into this game winning two in a row and four out of seven. above 0.500 this season.

However, this could be a bad place, a bad scenario for the Orioles.

Baltimore hands the ball to rookie right-hander Kyle Bradish for this one and the transition to the big leagues has been rocky. Bradish throws to an expected 6.06 ERA while giving up an expected .298 batting average to opposing teams.

He also has the highest HR/nine innings among starters with at least 30 innings pitched and now faces a Jays team that has hit the second-most homers against right-handers this season. (A pinch on Bo Bichette to go yard at +425 isn’t a bad investment).

Then there’s the fact that the Orioles have to deal with Jays starter Alek Manoah. The big right-hander has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season. He has an expected ERA of 2.79 and limits his opponents to an expected batting average of .239. And while his strikeouts are down a bit, he makes a ton of soft touches and dives deep in games.

That doesn’t bode well for an O squad that ranks 22nd in batting average and 21st in OPS against right-handers. Taking the Jays by a few points seems like the way to go tonight.

Prediction: Blue jays -1.5 (-137 to FanDuel)

Covers MLB betting analysis

Over/under analysis

As for the total, 8.5 might seem a bit low considering how many runs the Jays have been scoring lately, but that said, under bets seem like the safest bet here.

For starters, Alek Manoah isn’t going to give up much. As noted, he’s allowed two or fewer earned runs in 10 of his 11 starts and tends to dive deep in ball games. Additionally, he allowed just one earned run on five hits while striking out 16 in his last 13 innings against the O’s.

And yes, the Jays are likely to do some damage against Bradish, but if that happens, the O’s can count on a somewhat surprisingly strong bullpen that ranks seventh in ERA and 15th in WHIP. Bet on this one to sneak under the number.

Prediction: Less than 8.5 (-110 at DraftKings)

Best bet

The Jays offense might be one of the most underrated gifts to MLB bettors this season, and not because of guys like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and George Springer. That’s because there are countless other guys in the lineup who can get as hot as anyone in baseball.

We saw it with Alejandro Kirk and Santiago Espinal, and now it’s the turn of Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

The Blue Jays outfielder, who has notoriously been a slow starter during his career, is starting to warm up. Gurriel is now in the middle of a seven-game hitting streak where he is hitting .464 with a 1.143 OPS.

With him scoring five multi-game hits in that seven-game streak, getting more money like this is excellent value.

Take: Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Over 1.5 total bases (+140)
