Osinbajo to attend Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in London

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will leave Abuja for London on Saturday to represent Nigeria at several events on Sunday and Monday, including the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

“Prof. Osinbajo leaves Abuja today and will join royals, world leaders – including members of the Commonwealth, heads of state, governors general, prime ministers and foreign royal families – at the ceremonies, including the funeral service scheduled to be held at Westminster Abbey on Monday,” read a statement signed by the Vice President’s Senior Special Assistant for Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, on Saturday.

Queen Elizabeth II, 96, died on September 8, 2022 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, UK.

Until her death, she was the head of the Commonwealth and Britain’s oldest monarch, reigning for 70 years.

Akande added: “Ahead of the funeral, the Vice President will be among the guests and dignitaries who will be received by King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla, at a reception at Buckingham Palace on Sunday.

“Earlier today, the Vice President will hold a bilateral meeting with UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.”

The vice president will return to Nigeria after the state funeral on Monday.
