The mystery of the eerie flashing light in the south-east London night sky has been solved after a father from Orpington and his son set out on a mission to get answers.
Residents of south-east London and north Kent were baffled this week by a “strange” light spotted in the night sky.
Video of the light, filmed near the main street of Orpington on Tuesday evening, shows the light moving and rippling in the sky above what appears to be North Kent.
It flashes at different speeds and alternates in brightness for the full 22 seconds of the video.
Orpington’s father Stephen Sangster filmed the occupant of the skies and told the News Shopper that suggestions initially ranged from aliens or a laser show to an outdoor cinema.
Following the mystery, Stephen and his son Jack set off on a mission to see if the blinking light was in the sky again on Wednesday night.
Once again, Stephen saw and filmed the inescapable “eerie” light flapping from side to side in the sky – but got no confirmation as to what it was.
Stephen told the News Shopper that after asking subscribers where they thought the light was coming from, the most common response was that the light was coming from an outdoor theater in Brand Hatch – but he didn’t know why. they would project light into the air.
On Thursday Stephen said: “I think it’s a very powerful projector, but for what purpose I don’t know.
“With that kind of power, they should let CAA know as it could interfere with planes.”
Stephen’s search of the CAA database showed only one warning about a searchlight – which was in Hever Castle with only a one-mile radius warning.
Determined to unravel the mystery, he then declared that he “was going out this evening (Thursday) on a vigilante hunt to get to the bottom of it”.
And that’s what he did.
Stephen and the adorable Jack went on an adventure to solve the mystery of the light – all while vlogging it all for his dedicated devotees to watch.

The videos show Stephen and Jack discussing the light, while driving along the roads of south-east London to find it.
And, after 90 minutes of searching, it turns out that there are ultimately no aliens from South East London.
In fact, to confirm many of Stephen’s suggestions, the mysterious bright lights were from an outdoor cinema at Brands Hatch.
They first saw the lights come from the ground behind a fence that they “couldn’t get through.”
Instead, Stephen and Jack took a tour of the cinema park – without a ticket – “to get to the bottom of it.”
There, they then watched the “strange” searchlights beam across the sky before being “escorted”.
Stephen said: “These are not aliens, this is not Batman, this is not even a Downing Street party.
“It’s an outdoor cinema at Brands Hatch – at least we got to the bottom of it.”
He added that he would recommend that they warn the CAA because the high-sky display “can be annoying for aircraft.”
Stephen ends his three-part vlog with relief, saying “mystery solved, let’s get out of here”.
