Things to do in London in December if you love comics

|

Another month, another things to do in London if you love comics. As we start to get back to normal, we start to have a few new events in person. Hide yourself, however …

Exhibitions

  • BLACK is a special exhibit to celebrate Black History Month, exploring the history and world of the graphic novel of the same name – an unwavering but uplifting graphic memory of Tobias Taitt and Anthony Smith. BLACK is the true life story of Tobias, growing from a child raised in social services in 1970s and 1980s Britain to a young man pursuing a life of criminal before becoming a writer. The graphic novel, which has already been serialized in several volumes of the acclaimed digital anthology Aces Weekly, is the story of a dysfunctional family life and a childhood spent mostly in care. It tackles the themes of class and race as teenage Tobias gravitates from care to crime. The exhibition will feature a selection of original artwork from the graphic novel as well as a showcase of iconic objects from everyday life in 1980s Britain that provided artistic inspiration for the world of BLACK, as well as reflections of the creators. The Cartoon Museum, Wells Street, London, until February 8, 2022.
  • Beano: the art of breaking the rules, Somerset House, Aldwych, London. Curated by artist and lifelong “Beano” lover, Andy Holden, this major new exhibition brings together original comic book artwork and fascinating artifacts from the magazine’s archives. In addition to exploring how characters such as Dennis and Gnasher, Minnie the Minx and the Bash Street Kids have encouraged generations of Britons to become playful rule breakers – with contributions from Sarah Lucas, Hardeep Pandhal, and more – l The exhibition includes several new works celebrating the mischievous spirit of the ‘Beano’. He promises to deliver a huge “splat!” (As the “Beano” might say) of comic book nostalgia and creative inspiration, until March 2022.
  • The Comic Strip Museum: Drawing Life. A new exhibit showcasing the best of the Cartoon Museum’s comic book art collection, curated by Cartoon Museum designer and administrator Steve Bell. The Cartoon Museum, Wells Street, London, until December 31.
  • Laughter laboratory. Come and participate in the world’s first mass public experiment exploring the psychology behind comic book humor, designed in partnership with Robin Dunbar, professor of evolutionary psychology in the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford. What makes a cartoon funny? Does science have the answers? Or is laughter spontaneous and deeply personal? We need YOU to help find the answers by voting on the treasures in the Cartoon Museum’s collection. In addition to laughing around this revolutionary experience, you will also discover uplifting and entertaining perspectives on the laughter and humor of a bunch of cartoonists, comedians, psychologists and scientists. The Cartoon Museum, Wells Street, London until June 5, 2022.
